designing since childhood

I designed my first logo as a kid while waiting for my mom to finish an exercise class at the YMCA. It was a hand-drawn, checkerboard patterned logo with red text and a yellow border that read “Katz Kitchen”, a pretend diner I imagined for the sake of creating a logo.

At the time, I had no idea that I was going to end up designing logos professionally or that I’d talk about that drawing years later. I was just a kid having fun.

My parents unknowingly supported this path by providing me with opportunities to work with computers and design software at a very early age. My dad set me up with a Mario Brothers typing game, encouraging me to “master the keyboard”. And my mom let me tinker with her Aldus PageMaker software when she wasn’t using it. She created multi-page newsletters for the family business, while I created shark-shaped words and clever signs for my room.

then I got some formal education

I dove into design world while studying Landscape Architecture at the University of Georgia. I remember taking an intro to graphic design class and got really into some design software called Adobe Illustrator and started teaching myself how to use it more proficiently. I used it for almost every project I could, finding new methods to create compelling digital graphics each time. Nerd alert!

I definitely had an affinity for it. And I still do. Since college, my path has meandered quite a bit, but graphic design has remained a consistent thread weaving it’s way through most of my work experience, my personal life, and even my social life.

now what?
